Historic Addition, Lincoln, Massachusetts, 1994
An Eighteenth Century country house stands at the heart of this extensive renovation and addition. The plan extends the existing four- cornered volume, generating a cobble stone courtyard framed by a new barn, a guesthouse, and an arcade that creates an entryway at the rear of the original house. We established an abstract, classical vocabulary to resonate with the earlier structure, with gently pitched roofs, exposed roof framing reminiscent of ornamental dentils, and articulated columns referencing the Doric order. The formed copper eaves, gutters, and downspouts; the slate roofs; and the bluestone paving with cut granite edging were used to complement the quality and style of the old house.
