Case Mill Farm, Westport, Massachusetts, 2001
A vineyard landscape of small grazing pastures surrounded by high stone walls and a quiet mill pond characterize this old riverside farm in Southeastern Massachusetts. An old cape farmhouse standing at the center of several additions clearly merited preservation. A larger main volume would establishe a new center for this house of 7500 square feet, which coupled with the farmhouse (transformed into a master bedroom wing and offices), would shape a terrace that catches the sun and views of the pond and the river to the east. A timber frame of recycled Douglas Fir arches over a tall living room designed for entertaining. The kitchen and its eating bay adjacent are set under a lower ceiling. In addition to guest rooms, a small apartment, and a basket-weaving studio with its own porch at the lower level, this project included a working barn and an equipment shed sited to access the upland pastures to the west, whose walls have now been masterfully reconstructed in the finest tradition of Irish stone masonry.
