Lake Camp, New Hampshire, l994
We were fortunate to meet clients who knew they wanted a real summer “camp.” In retrospect, this was a seminal project for our office, providing us with the opportunity to explore some of the attributes of the Adirondack Style that was made famous by the great camps of William West Durant. Our plan, with its Main House and simple Bunk House providing overflow space for grandchildren, enabled us to build a house of six bedrooms for a very modest budget. The joining porch provides a place for the front door while also framing a view of the lake. The deep overhanging one-story roof with cut out porches conveys a sense of shelter and connection to the land. The “great room” with its heavy timber frame was conceived as the armature of this house, with the overlooking kitchen and surrounding bedrooms above reinforcing the notion of a single center of activity for a family on vacation. A large bay window facing the lake also provides seating for the dining area.
